Solving the Israeli - Palestinian Conflict
ceakins — Tue, 01/13/2009 - 23:39
I am one of those silly Americans who actually BELIEVES in the Enlightened principles that were at the heart and center of the founding of our own democratic republic.
I believe that the ONLY way to permanent peace in Israel-Palestine is through the formation of a single, secular state (COMPLETE separation of church and state) with universal suffrage and no special rights for Jews or Muslims or anyone else. I do not believe in the very concept of "a Jewish state" any more than I believe in the concept of "a Muslim state" or "a Christian state".
I don't believe in "the right of return" for a Jew from Indianapolis or Crete with NO "right of return" for a Muslim trapped in Gaza who was born in Jerusalem. I believe Zionism is racist, discriminatory, xenophobic and disastrous for Jewish people world-wide and in Israel-Palestine. The whole concept of a "Jewish state" is why Israelis are keeping the Palestinians in camps in the first place: they cannot incorporate Israel-Palestine into one state without losing their artificial "Jewish state". It's gerrymandering on a national scale.
No one can form a "religious state" without resorting to oppression. To even try to do so is a recipe for a social disaster, not unlike the disaster that has been going on in Israel-Palestine since before we were born, and will probably continue after we're dead.
Look at Iran. Look at Saudi Arabia. Find me a "religious state" that isn't repressive and/or constantly at war. The world is evolving AWAY from oppressive religious states and towards tolerant secular democracies.
What in the world are We the People doing, propping up the aspirations of hard-line Zionist zealots?!? They are no better than the most hard-line Jihadist zealots. It's two sides of the same intolerant, xenophobic coin.
